MVP vs prototype vs proof of concept

These three terms get mixed up constantly. Each answers a different question, and picking the right one saves time and money.

Proof of concept (PoC)

Answers: can this be built? A PoC tests technical feasibility, for example whether an AI model can extract the data you need. It's usually internal and not meant for users.

Prototype

Answers: how will it work, and do people understand it? A prototype is a clickable design used for feedback, pitching and user testing. Nothing works behind it.

Minimum viable product (MVP)

Answers: will people use it and pay for it? An MVP is real, working software that real users sign up for. It's the first step that produces actual market evidence.

Which do you need?

  • Unsure it's technically possible? Start with a PoC.
  • Need to pitch or test a flow? A prototype.
  • Ready to learn from real users and revenue? An MVP.
  • GetMVP's Spark package covers landing pages and proofs of concept; Velocity and Orbit deliver full MVPs, with a prototype stage included.

Frequently asked questions

Is a prototype an MVP?

No. A prototype shows how a product could work; an MVP works.

Do I need a prototype before an MVP?

With GetMVP the prototype is part of the MVP process. You review it on days 3–5.

Which is cheapest?

A prototype or PoC, but only an MVP tells you whether people will pay.
